Background on Thigh Lifts

What is a Thigh Lift?

The effects of time and gravity can cause the skin of the inner and outer thigh to lose tone. This loss of tone can cause the skin to sag or lose the smooth appearance of an earlier age. This condition can be exaggerated by weight loss and by liposuction performed as a sole procedure in the past.

Along with sagging skin, the thighs can be an area of fat collection. Excessive fat can produce an unpleasant contour. For many individuals, in particular women, the fatty deposits do not respond to weight loss or exercise. Liposuction alone may improve the contour of the thighs when skin tone is good and excessive fat is the primary problem. However, when liposuction is performed alone on an individual with loose skin or existing cellulite, these conditions are usually worsened. The thigh lift procedure usually involves both liposuction and the removal of excessive skin from either the inner or outer thigh or both. Dr. Capella usually performs an outer thigh lift procedure as part of a body lift and an inner thigh lift as a separate procedure.

Going Above and Beyond

Dr. Capella has found that by performing a body lift first, a procedure which is a combination of a tummy tuck, thigh lift, and buttock lift, many individuals have sufficient improvement of inner thigh contour to not need an inner thigh lift. The body lift only entails a scar along the bikini line and is easily hidden. For those individuals who request additional improvement of the thighs following a body lift, an inner thigh lift is then considered. Dr. Capella typically requests that individuals wait three months following a body lift to have an inner thigh lift.

Thigh Lift Pre-Operative Visit

It is imperative that you discontinue any medications that may cause bleeding at this time. These medications will be reviewed at the time of the visit.

You will be asked to sign a consent form for surgery. Dr. Capella performs thigh lift procedures with general anesthesia. Dr. Capella will write prescriptions for antibiotics to decrease the risk of infection and narcotic analgesics for post-operative pain relief.

You should wear loose-fitting clothing that will wash easily in the event it is soiled. Do not wear jewelry or contact lenses or bring valuables to the operating room. Remove all jewelry from pierced body parts, as it can interfere with the procedure and may represent a safety threat to you because of the use of electrocautery during the procedure.

On the day of surgery, the anesthesiologist will review your medical history and perform a directed physical examination.

Dr. Capella will place markings on you while you are standing up. An inner thigh lift procedure takes approximately two hours. Usually, the procedure begins with liposuction and is followed by the removal of excess skin. Sterile dressings are placed on the incisions, followed by an elastic bandage. Thigh Lift Recovery and Aftercare

During the first several days after surgery, it is not unusual to have drainage from your incisions. At the time of your Thigh Lift surgery, fluid is injected into your thighs to decrease blood loss and facilitate liposuction. Much of your drainage will be this fluid.

Walking during the first 48 hours is strongly recommended as tolerated. Climbing stairs or activities that produce tension across the wounds, such as squatting, should be avoided for the first three days. The dressings may be removed, and showering is permitted 48 hours after surgery. Mild soap may be used. Your first office visit will be approximately one week following surgery. At this time, Dr. Capella will assess the incisions and verify that appropriate healing is taking place.

Additional Reading

Your thighs will feel “tight” and will be swollen. Most of the swelling should be gone by six weeks after surgery. Individuals with desk-type employment may resume work in one week. Vigorous activities or aerobic exercises should not be resumed for six weeks. The scars will tend to become increasingly red after two weeks and begin to fade after two to three months. The scars will never completely disappear and will take from 12 to 18 months to reach their final appearance. Dr. Capella will emphasize the importance of minimizing sun exposure to the scars, especially while they are still red. If sun exposure is to occur during this time, a sunblock with a rating of 15 or greater should be applied to the incisions.

Thigh Lift Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks associated with Thigh Lifts?

Dr. Capella has a track record of executing numerous thigh lift procedures with exceptional outcomes. However, as with any surgical intervention, there are potential complications, some specific to this operation. Minor skin separation in the groin area may occur but typically responds well to dressing changes, ensuring the final result aligns with overall wound healing. Given that smoking can escalate the risk of complications and delay wound healing by impacting the skin's blood circulation, smokers are advised to quit several weeks before surgery. Adherence to our pre- and post-operative instructions is a vital step in minimizing potential complications.

Can I get a good result from an inner thigh lift achieved with a scar only at my groin if I have lost a lot of weight?

No. Much of the loose skin of the inner thighs is a result of the pubic area and lower abdomen falling toward the inner thighs. In addition, in weight loss patients, the outer thighs and buttocks also fall, contributing to the loose skin of the inner thighs. For these reasons, Dr. Capella prefers to perform a body lift first in most weight loss patients prior to performing an inner thigh lift. For those patients who still have concerns regarding their inner thighs after a body lift, Dr. Capella performs a separate inner thigh lift procedure with a vertical component along the inner thigh. A thigh lift limited to the groin would add little benefit to a body lift.

When Dr. Capella performs an inner thigh lift, how far does the vertical scar go down the inner thigh?

Most weight loss patients, particularly women, have concerns about the loose skin and fat on the inner aspect of the knees. For this reason, for the majority of weight loss patients who request an inner thigh lift after a body lift, the scar needs to extend to the knee to achieve a satisfactory outcome. However, in a small percentage of patients, where the excess skin and fat is limited to the upper inner thighs, the vertical scar does not need to extend to the knee. Another small percentage of patients have loose skin and fat that involves the leg below the knee. In these cases, Dr. Capella will extend the vertical scar from the inner thigh onto the inner aspect of the leg.

Will liposuction alone help my thighs if I have lost weight?

No. Patients with loose skin from weight loss or aging will develop contour irregularities or a cobblestone appearance if liposuction alone is performed. These irregularities are difficult to correct and may make it more difficult to achieve an ideal result following a thigh lift.

Should I get liposuction of my thighs before I get an inner thigh lift?

No. Liposuction creates scar tissue and will make it technically more difficult for the surgeon to perform an inner thigh lift in the future. In addition, the thighs will look worse from liposuction if a skin tightening procedure is not performed at the same time.

Does Dr. Capella perform liposuction as part of an inner thigh lift?

Yes, in most cases. Liposuction can improve the results of an inner thigh lift. The liposuction is performed at the same time as the inner thigh lift. Dr. Capella is very careful, however, to not liposuction areas of the thigh that can result in permanent contour deformities.

How often does Dr. Capella perform inner thigh lifts?

Inner or medial Thigh Lifts are one of the most common operations performed by Dr. Capella. He has personally performed over 2,000 inner thigh lifts (1000 patients) and has the largest published series of inner thigh lifts by a single plastic surgeon in the world.
